“If you can’t say something nice, don’t say anything at all.”
Over the years, how many mothers have said this to their children? I remember Mom citing this phrase numerous times growing up. When I was a little girl Mom would reference Thumper and his comment to his mother about Bambi, “he’s kinda wobbly.” Thumper’s mother reprimands him and reminds him of what his father had impressed upon him earlier that day. “If you can’t say something nice, don’t say nothing at all.”
My mom passed away several years ago, but in my mind I can still hear her voice saying this adage.
We’re all kinda wobbly. Everyone has a sensitive, hurtful zone that is triggered by idle gossip or mean comments. I know I’m easily hurt by unkind comments and gossip. Knowing my weakness, I attempt to surround myself with positive people and conversation. Doing so brings energy, happiness and productivity my way.
Some tips from my late mom:
Don’t gossip.
Keep confidences that others shared with you.
Remember how you feel when your feelings are hurt.
Smile, others like happy people.
Thanks Mom!
